Paid Summer Volunteer Internships with the City of Austin


2013 UT/Community Summer Associates Program Summary
June 3, 2013 – August 9, 2013

Overview

The UT DDCE will partner with the City of Austin to help make a bigger impact in alleviating poverty in the community through education and food security programs and services coordinated through programs and services within six agencies. 

Agencies and Summer Associate Placements:

BiGAUSTIN (Business Investment Growth Austin)– a small business development non-profit organization designed to develop the next generation of entrepreneurs in Austin from a variety of disadvantaged population groups including youth ages 13-19 through the Entrepreneurial Training for Youth (ENTRY) Program, Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBEs) in the construction industry through the Working Capital & Technical Assistant Program, and ex-offenders interested in self-employment through the Small Business & Job Creation Ex-Offender Re-Entry Program.

Con Mi Madre (CMM) – a non-profit organization working with the UT School of Social Work to increase the representation of Hispanic girls in post-secondary institutions through a focus on education and social support services to girls and their mothers.

Austin Pre-freshman Engineering Program (AusPrEP) - AusPrEP is one of the Texas Pre-freshman Engineering Programs (TexPrEP) located on college campuses in Texas.   PrEP was founded to identify high achieving middle and high school students with the potential and interest in becoming scientists and engineers and to reinforce them in the pursuit of these fields.  AusPrEP, located at Huston-Tillotson University, focuses on recruiting girls and students from minority groups, who have been traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering.

UT University Outreach Centers (UOC) – The UT University Outreach Centers provide a college preparatory program for underrepresented students in grades 8-12.  The program is designed to enhance students’ success academically and ensure they are college admissible upon graduation from high school. Furthermore, staff assist students with potential barriers (e.g., entrance exam deadlines), and equip them with tools to successfully negotiate the college admissions process.

UT Pre-College Academic Readiness Program (PCARP) - The UT PCARP is a program within the DDCE designed to provide academic preparation through a variety of college-level curricula designed to improve college readiness among Texas high school students underrepresented in postsecondary institutions.

United Way for Greater Austin – The United Way for Greater Austin (UWATX) is a local nonprofit and community service organization providing resources and volunteer opportunities with local Austin charities.  The 30 Summer Associates will support strategic work in UWATX’s two premiere education initiatives:  Target Graduation (a program designed to positively impact student performance as well as the culture of learning in schools by coordinating systems which emphasize collaboration to prepare students for success in college, work and life) and Success by 6 (a cooperative program designed to make sure every child is ready for kindergarten by improving the complex networks of child care services, parent education, public and private funding and public policy in the Central Texas community).

Capital Area Food Bank - The Capital Area Food Bank of Texas (CAFB) provides food and grocery products to more than 300 Partner Agencies in 21 Central Texas counties fulfilling its mission to nourish hungry people and lead the community in ending hunger.
